About our Herd

Because we do not yet have a permanent facility and the significant financial reserves needed to promise every horse a forever home, we do not currently accept donated horses. Ride for Joy care leases all of the horses that participate in the program, which means we have exclusive use of the horse in exchange for covering the expenses of their routine care and management. Some horse owners also choose to fund the ongoing care of their horse through a generous tax-deductible donation, allowing us to expand and serve more children by being able to have more horses in the program. We currently only do full care leases (not partial), because our training and lesson program is a full time job for the horses. In general, we seek horses to care lease for Ride for Joy that meet the following criteria:

  • Fit and healthy

  • Sound at all three gates (walk, trot, canter/lope)

  • Calm temperament

  • People/kid friendly

  • Broke to ride but no formal training needed

  • Between the ages of 6 years and 20 years

Ride for Joy is not currently taking lease horses for the program. Please check back for updates.
