Volunteer Eligibility and Application Process

Eligibility

The minimum age to participate as a volunteer at Ride for Joy is 14.

The minimum age to participate as a volunteer horse leader is 18.

Volunteers who participate in the arena assisting with lessons must be:
  • physically able to walk and occasionally jog for extended periods in a sand arena
  • physically able to react quickly to help dismount a child in the event of an emergency
  • Important volunteer duties outside of the arena may also be available, such as participating as a greeter, helping with the gate, music and games, and helping with special events and fundraising.

    Application Process

Step 1: Make an appointment to observe lessons and receive a brief orientation. Email volunteer@rideforjoy.org or call
208-861-0879 to schedule an appointment. Please note we will not be holding lesson observation and orientations for prospective volunteers until early 2012.

Step 2: Complete a volunteer application. The volunteer application packet is given to prospective volunteers at the lesson observation and orientation.

Step 3: Attend a New Volunteer Training. Volunteers cannot participate in lessons until completing a New Volunteer Training class, which is offered a few times a year.

Step 4: New volunteers are scheduled to assist with lessons after attending a New Volunteer Training class. Our lesson days and times may change from session to session (sessions range from 4-8 weeks), so we will work with you to find an assignment in the session that best fits your schedule.
